Contact the police where theft or immediate risk is involved
Move the vehicle to a secure location where possible
Do not leave documents showing the vehicle's address inside it
Check whether house keys, garage keys or address details were stolen at the same time
Inform the insurer where required
Gather identification and proof of ownership

Can the Stolen Key Be Deleted From the Car?

On many compatible vehicles, a missing key can be removed from or disabled within the vehicle's electronic key memory when replacement keys are programmed. However:

The exact capability depends on the vehicle
Not every vehicle uses the same security system
A deleted electronic key may no longer start the engine
The physical blade may still mechanically operate a door lock on some vehicles
Mechanical lock replacement or recoding may need to be considered separately
Some vehicles require specialist, workshop or dealer-level procedures

The replacement process may be similar, but theft can create a greater security concern because somebody may intentionally possess the key and know which vehicle it belongs to. For that reason, removing the missing key from the vehicle's system is often sensible where the vehicle supports it.
