Modern vehicles use encrypted transponder technology in their keys. If a key's chip fails or a new key is supplied, it must be electronically paired to the vehicle's immobiliser before the engine will start. Replacing a normal remote or smart-key battery does not normally cause the key to lose its programming.

Does My Car Key Actually Need Programming?
A newly supplied replacement key normally needs appropriate programming where the vehicle uses an immobiliser or electronic key system.
Replacing a normal remote or smart-key coin-cell battery does not normally mean the key needs to be programmed again.
If a key starts the vehicle but the remote buttons do not work, diagnose the remote, key or vehicle locking system rather than immediately assuming immobiliser programming is required. See our guide to car key buttons not working.

Recent Work
BMW E46 key programming in Wantage. The EWS immobiliser module was removed from behind the dashboard and the new transponder was programmed directly to the EEPROM chip on the circuit board. The key blade was then cut and remote central locking coded in — the customer's original key had no working central locking.
