How to Avoid Locking Your Keys in Your Car
We've all done it — slammed the door shut and watched the keys sitting on the seat. Here are practical tips to prevent it happening, and what to do when it does.
The Universal Mistake
It happens to the best of us. You step out of the car, close the door, and through the window you see your keys sitting on the seat. The doors are locked. The engine might even be running. And your day just got significantly more complicated.
Vehicle lockouts are one of the most common callouts we attend. While we're always happy to help, we'd rather you didn't need us in the first place. Here are the most effective ways to avoid locking your keys in your car.
Tip 1: Always Hold Your Keys Before Closing the Door
This sounds obvious, but it's the single most effective habit you can build. Before you close any car door, make sure the keys are in your hand — not in your pocket, not on the seat, not on the roof. Get into the habit of physically feeling the keys in your hand before the door shuts.
It takes about two seconds. It will save you hours.
Tip 2: Understand Your Car's Auto-Lock Feature
Many modern vehicles automatically lock themselves after a period of inactivity, or when you walk away with the key on your person. This is a great security feature — but it can also lock the keys inside if:
- You leave the keys in the car and walk away
- Someone else is still inside the vehicle
- The sensor doesn't detect the key on your person correctly (flat fob battery, interference)
Read your owner's manual to understand exactly how your car's auto-lock works. Some systems can be adjusted or disabled if they're causing problems.
Tip 3: Never Leave Keys on the Roof or Boot
We see this one more than you'd think. You put the keys down on the roof or the open boot to juggle bags, children, or shopping, then forget about them, close the boot, and drive off. Keys fall off the roof at traffic lights, or get locked in the boot.
Rule: if the keys aren't in your hand, they go in your pocket or bag. Nowhere else.
Tip 4: Keep a Spare Key Somewhere Smart
If you have a spare key, don't keep it inside the vehicle — that defeats the purpose. Instead:
- Keep it at home in a memorable, safe place
- Leave one with a trusted family member or neighbour
- Consider a magnetic key box (though be aware these are less secure than they once were)
If you lock yourself out, a quick call to whoever holds your spare is far cheaper and faster than a locksmith callout.

Tip 5: Don't Rely on the Boot
Some people think "I'll just put the keys in the boot while I load the shopping." Then they close the boot, and the car auto-locks. The boot is connected to the central locking system on most modern vehicles — if the car locks, the boot is locked too.
Tip 6: Replace a Dying Key Fob Battery Immediately
A weak key fob battery can cause intermittent issues where the car doesn't respond to unlock commands. You might press the button, assume it hasn't worked, press again — and inadvertently lock the car while the door is open. When you close the door, it's locked with the keys inside.
If your fob is behaving inconsistently, replace the battery today. Not tomorrow. Today.
What to Do If You've Locked Your Keys in the Car
If it's already happened, stay calm:
- Check all doors and the boot — sometimes one door isn't fully closed or the lock hasn't engaged
- Check if you have a spare key accessible from someone nearby
- Don't break a window — this causes expensive damage and could injure you. A locksmith can get you in without any damage
- Call a mobile auto locksmith — we use non-destructive entry techniques and can have you back in your vehicle in minutes
