Lost My Car Keys – What Should I Do?

Lost your car keys? This guide covers what to do first, whether a locksmith can make a key without the original, spare keys, all-keys-lost situations and mobile replacement across Oxfordshire.

Lost your car keys and not sure what to do? Whether you have misplaced your only key, lost a spare or have no working keys left, you usually still have options. Depending on the make, model, year and security system, a mobile auto locksmith may be able to cut and program a replacement key without the vehicle being taken to a main dealer.

What Should I Do If I've Lost My Car Keys?

If you've just realised your car key is missing, take a moment before assuming the worst. A few quick checks can save you time and money:

  • Check whether a spare key exists. A partner, family member or neighbour may hold one. If a spare exists, the situation is far simpler — you may only need a replacement car key rather than a full all-keys-lost service.
  • Search the obvious locations. Pockets, bags, jacket linings, down the sides of sofas and car seats, and the car itself (including the boot). Set yourself a sensible time limit — if you haven't found it in 15 minutes, move on.
  • Consider whether the key may have been stolen rather than misplaced. If you suspect theft, tell your locksmith — the security implications are different and the old key may need to be deauthorised from the vehicle.
  • Don't force locks or damage the vehicle. Breaking a window or forcing a lock causes expensive damage and can create safety risks. A locksmith can gain access non-destructively if needed.
  • Gather your vehicle information before contacting a locksmith. Having your registration number, make, model and year ready will get you a faster, more accurate response.
  • If no working keys remain, this is an "all keys lost" situation. It's still resolvable — see the next section.

What If I've Lost All My Car Keys?

Losing every working key to your vehicle does not automatically mean the car must be recovered to a main dealer. Depending on the vehicle, a mobile auto locksmith may be able to:

  • gain access to the vehicle where required, using non-destructive vehicle entry techniques
  • cut a replacement key blade to the correct profile
  • program the replacement key to the vehicle's immobiliser system
  • test the replacement on site to confirm it starts and locks the vehicle

This is not possible on every make, model and year — some vehicles require dealer-only equipment or procedures. But for many vehicles, a mobile service can save the cost and inconvenience of having the car towed.

Real KeyLogik Example: VW Transporter All Keys Lost

In April 2025, a customer in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire contacted KeyLogik after losing every key to their Volkswagen Transporter. Rather than having the van recovered to a dealer, KeyLogik came to the vehicle, gained entry without damage, removed the instrument cluster to read the immobiliser data, cut a new key to the correct profile and programmed it on the spot. The van was back in use the same day.

Can a Locksmith Make a Car Key Without the Original?

On many vehicles, yes — a replacement key can be produced without the original. The procedure varies significantly by vehicle and may involve:

  • diagnostic programming via the vehicle's OBD port
  • security-module access to retrieve key data
  • key data extraction from the immobiliser or ECU
  • physical key cutting to the correct blade profile
  • manufacturer-specific procedures for certain makes and systems

Not every vehicle uses the same method. Some newer or premium vehicles with advanced security systems may require different equipment or a different approach entirely. A locksmith will be able to tell you whether your specific vehicle can be done once they know the registration, make, model and year.

Do I Need to Take My Car to the Main Dealer?

Not always. A main dealer is one option, but it is not the only one. A mobile auto locksmith can sometimes attend the vehicle at your home, workplace or roadside location instead of the vehicle being transported elsewhere.

Whether a locksmith or a dealer is the better route depends on the vehicle, the key system, availability in your area, and how quickly you need it resolved. Cost, speed and support all vary by situation — neither is universally cheaper, faster or better. For many vehicles, a mobile locksmith can complete the job on-site; for others, a dealer may be the only practical option.

Can a Lost Car Key Be Removed From the Vehicle?

Depending on the vehicle and key system, a missing key may be removable or deauthorisable from the vehicle's authorised key list during replacement key programming. This means the old key would no longer start the vehicle even if it were found or recovered.

This is not possible on every vehicle — some systems do not support individual key deletion, and a full system reset may be required instead. If your key was lost rather than stolen, this may be less of a concern. But if you suspect the key was stolen, it's important to tell the locksmith so they can advise whether the old key can be deauthorised on your specific vehicle.

How Much Does It Cost to Replace Lost Car Keys?

There is no single fixed price. The cost can depend on:

  • the vehicle make and model
  • the vehicle year
  • the key type (basic blade, remote fob, flip key, smart or proximity key)
  • whether all keys are lost or a spare car key still exists
  • whether vehicle entry is required to gain access
  • the programming and security work required for your specific vehicle

To check what options are available, send your registration number, vehicle year, location and whether any working keys remain. You'll get a clear, upfront quote before any work begins.

What Information Will a Locksmith Need?

Having this information ready will get you a faster, more accurate response:

  • Registration number — the locksmith can often look up the exact model from this
  • Vehicle make and model (e.g. Ford Focus, VW Transporter)
  • Year of manufacture or registration
  • Your current location (home address, workplace or roadside)
  • Whether any working keys remain — this determines whether it's a spare key or an all-keys-lost job
  • A photo of the existing key if one is available, as this helps identify the key type
  • Whether the key was lost or potentially stolen — this affects the security approach

Should I Check Insurance or Key Cover?

Some motor insurance policies or standalone key cover include replacement key provision — sometimes with a contribution toward the cost or a specified supplier. Before arranging a locksmith, it is worth checking:

  • whether your motor insurance policy includes key replacement cover
  • whether you have standalone key cover (sometimes offered by breakdown providers)
  • whether the policy requires you to use a specific supplier or allows you to choose your own
  • whether there is an excess or contribution limit
  • whether making a claim affects your no-claims bonus

Even if key cover exists, many customers find that a mobile auto locksmith is faster and more convenient than going through the insurer's nominated supplier — and sometimes cheaper once the excess is taken into account. KeyLogik does not deal with insurance claims directly, but we can provide a clear, upfront quote so you can compare.

How Does Losing All Keys Differ from Ordering a Spare?

The difference is significant. When at least one working key remains, a spare key can usually be added by programming a new transponder alongside the existing one — a relatively straightforward process on most supported vehicles.

When every key is lost, there is no original to copy from. The locksmith must decode the mechanical lock, generate a new key blade from scratch, and programme the transponder to the vehicle's immobiliser without a working key present. This is a more complex, time-consuming and expensive process — which is exactly why having a spare key made in advance is worthwhile.
