Does Your Key Start the Car but Not Unlock It?
Many modern car keys contain two separate systems. The immobiliser transponder allows the engine to start, while the remote section of the key controls the central locking.
This means the key may continue to start the vehicle normally even when the lock, unlock or boot-release buttons have stopped working. One part of the key can fail while the other continues functioning correctly.
Common causes include worn buttons, damaged internal switches, water damage, failed electronics or general wear from everyday use. It does not always mean there is a fault with the vehicle’s central locking system.
When a key still starts the car but the remote buttons have stopped working, the remote section of the key itself is a common culprit. The buttons, internal microswitches or circuit board can fail while the immobiliser transponder continues to start the engine normally.
The same symptom can occasionally point to a vehicle-side fault instead — for example a central-locking module, receiver or fuse issue — so it should not be assumed that the key is always the cause. If a second key operates the central locking normally on the same vehicle, that is useful evidence that the original key is faulty rather than the car. A key that neither starts the vehicle nor operates the remote may point to a different problem entirely — for example, if your car says "Key Not Detected" rather than the buttons simply not working, that is a different symptom with different causes and would need separate diagnosis.
Real Example: Jeep Key Buttons Not Working
A customer in Didcot, Oxfordshire had a 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a key that still started the vehicle, but the remote lock and unlock buttons had stopped working.

Why Do Car Key Buttons Stop Working?
Worn microswitches
The small internal switches beneath the buttons can wear out after years of regular use. This may cause the buttons to become intermittent or stop responding completely.
Failed remote electronics
Electronic components inside the remote can fail even when the immobiliser transponder continues to start the vehicle.
Water damage
Moisture can damage the circuit board, battery contacts or internal components. The effects may appear immediately or develop gradually.
Physical damage
Dropping, crushing or bending the key can damage the casing, circuit board or internal connections.
Heavy daily use
Frequently used buttons can wear faster, particularly on a customer’s only key.
Broken solder joints
Small solder connections inside the key may crack or separate, causing intermittent or complete remote failure.
Flat or leaking battery
A weak battery can reduce the remote range or stop the buttons from working. A leaking battery can also damage the internal contacts.
Damaged battery terminals
Bent, corroded or broken battery contacts may prevent the remote from receiving reliable power.
Worn rubber buttons
The outer rubber buttons can split, collapse or wear away, allowing dirt and moisture to reach the internal electronics.
