When no working BMW key remains, the procedure depends heavily on the vehicle generation and immobiliser system. Some vehicles can be handled through diagnostic procedures, while others may require module removal, bench programming, lock decoding or additional security work.

BMW CAS Systems
BMW CAS Immobiliser Programming
CAS means Car Access System. Its different generations manage key recognition and security functions using generation-specific procedures; a method suitable for one CAS system does not necessarily apply to another.
KeyLogik checks the installed system and current support before confirming spare or replacement-key programming, including the relevant remote functions.
BMW FEM / BDC
BMW FEM & BDC Bench Programming
Later BMW platforms moved key and body-security functions into systems such as the Front Electronic Module (FEM) and Body Domain Controller (BDC). The exact module and procedure depends on the chassis and production generation. These are different systems, not interchangeable names, and not every F-series BMW uses FEM.
Some supported jobs require module removal and bench work rather than diagnostic programming alone. Our genuine BMW M140i spare-key job in Abingdon shows FEM bench programming on that particular vehicle, not a procedure applicable to every newer BMW.
Programming
BMW Key Programming
Spare and replacement keys must be correctly authorised to the vehicle’s security system. Mechanical cutting alone does not provide that authorisation; KeyLogik checks the compatible key type and programming procedure before confirming the job.
On supported BMWs, relevant starting and remote functions are checked after programming. Keyless entry is only relevant where fitted and supported.

Key Not Detected
BMW Key Not Detected?
If your BMW displays "Key Not Detected" or a similar warning, the fault is not necessarily lost programming. On BMWs with comfort access or keyless go, the smart key battery, the backup detection method, the vehicle battery or the vehicle-side receiver system can all produce this symptom.
Before assuming the key needs reprogramming, check the key battery where applicable, follow the vehicle handbook’s backup-detection procedure and compare with a second key. Sensing positions vary; if both previously working keys fail similarly, vehicle-side checks become more important.

Remote Buttons
BMW Remote Buttons Not Working?
If your BMW key still starts the engine but the remote locking buttons have stopped working, the remote section of the key may have failed while the immobiliser transponder continues to function. This is a common issue and does not always mean the vehicle's central locking is at fault.
Common causes include worn microswitches, water damage, failed remote electronics or a flat key battery. If a second key operates the central locking normally on the same vehicle, that is useful evidence that the original key is faulty rather than the car.

Older BMW Systems
Older BMW Key Systems (EWS)
Earlier BMWs use EWS immobiliser systems. The exact key and programming procedure depends on the EWS generation. In some cases, key data can require direct work with the immobiliser module rather than simple diagnostic programming.
EWS generations use different security and authorisation methods, including changing-code behaviour on later versions. They should not all be described as fixed-code keys. The system is checked before the appropriate procedure is confirmed.

For a missing, damaged or faulty BMW key, the right solution depends on what has failed and whether a working key remains. A fresh battery will not repair broken remote electronics or a damaged blade.

Keyless variants
BMW Comfort Access / Keyless Keys
Not every BMW has Comfort Access. Where keyless entry or starting is fitted, it requires the correct compatible key variant and authorisation procedure for that vehicle.
Tell us whether the car normally unlocks with the key in your pocket and whether another key operates those functions. Support is checked against the model, production generation and installed system, not the appearance of the key alone.
