BMW E46 Spare Key Programming – Real Job

Watch the full POV procedure as KeyLogik supplies and programmes a spare key for a BMW E46 — including specialist bench work on the EWS immobiliser module.

The Job

BMW E46 Spare Key — EWS Bench Programming

KeyLogik attended a BMW E46 at the customer's location in Wantage, Oxfordshire, to supply a spare key. The customer's original key had no working central locking buttons — the remote functions had failed entirely, leaving them to lock and unlock the car manually with the blade every time.

The BMW E46 uses the EWS (Elektronische Wegfahrsperre) immobiliser system, which stores the security data needed to programme new keys on a chip inside the EWS module itself. Unlike newer BMWs that can sometimes be programmed via the OBD port, the E46 requires the EWS module to be physically removed from behind the dashboard and connected to specialist bench equipment.

The EWS module was carefully removed from its location behind the dashboard and brought to the workbench. Using a specialist EEPROM programmer, the vehicle's security data was securely read from the chip on the circuit board. This data was then used to programme a new transponder to the immobiliser.

Once the transponder was coded, a new key blade was cut to profile and the remote central locking functions were programmed in — something the customer's original key didn't have at all. The EWS module was reinstalled, and the new key was tested: it starts the engine, locks and unlocks the car remotely, and works exactly like a factory key should.

The customer's original key could not be repaired — it still started the vehicle, but the remote central locking had failed entirely and was beyond restoration. The key was therefore left as it was, retaining its original function (engine start only) without remote capability. The outcome of the job was one new, fully functioning spare key with complete remote central locking, programmed and verified on-site. The entire process was completed at the customer's home in Wantage, with no vehicle recovery and no dealership visit required.
